I can’t tell you how many times I hear entrepreneurs all chat about how they struggle with knowing what to say to get people to go from interested to invested.

99.99% of the time, it’s not that they’re talking to the wrong people, but it’s in their ability to connect the dots between their story, their services, and the needs of who they want to reach.

This is something that when I first started out, I didn’t fully understand myself.

I thought that my experience alone with having developed social media strategies for startups, non-profits, Fortune 500 firms and my MBA alone would get people invested.

But, once I got out there, I realized that it’s your STORY, not your services that sell people. People relate and connect based on how well you can meet them on an emotional level.

Sure, the highlight reel works, and the experience and testimonials are good credibility boosters, but it took me having to learn HOW to appeal on an emotional level for my business to really take off.

So I took all of the bumps and bruises that I gained along the way while putting myself out there and only getting people that were interested in only a piece of what I had to offer and turned them into actionable lessons.

I committed myself to getting to know my client better than they knew themselves.

I embraced my story, the good and the bad, and stopped trying so hard to come across as having it all together.

Because the truth of the matter, in some areas in my life, I was a big old mess. But it was THOSE parts of me that were the most appealing, the most captivating NOT my one-liner or my list of client successes.

See, I had to realize that there were what I like to call “golden nuggets” in my story that took people from being interested in what I had to say, to invested in working with me.

In order to do this, I had to make some massive mindset shifts. I had to get over the limiting beliefs that echoed in my head, “no one wants to know that about you,” “your story isn’t that interesting,” “people don’t care.”  But, once I made those changes, mentally, it was almost like the flood gates opened.

I gained the confidence I needed to use those golden nuggets, and my entire business changed.

I discovered theses profit-boosting pearls about a couple of months into my business and towards the end of 2016, each month became my next biggest month in business.

And nothing visibly about my business or brand changed.

It was the same website, same brand colors, graphics, services. The difference was in my ability to effectively reach my ideal client without even really trying in some cases.

The day that I turned a 15-minute Uber ride to the airport into a $3600 client, I knew I was on to something.

Most think that I hopped into the backseat of the car and started blabbing about my services and how awesome they are when the driver asked the almost reflex question, “so, what do you do?”

But, it was quite the opposite.

I said no more than 5 words about what I do then changed the subject to talking about Thanksgiving.

But what happened during that conversation was almost magical.

We began to talk as if we had known each other for years, we chatted about things we both struggled with in our life, and before I knew it, we reached the airport. The conversation felt so natural that I didn’t even realize that the entire time she was becoming even more interested in my business without me saying more than a few words at the beginning of the ride about it.

At the end of the ride, we exchanged info, and you can guess what happened from there.

I tell this story not to be braggadocious about bringing in clients but to share with other service-based entrepreneurs, what’s possible when they learn to use their story strategically and authentically.

The difference is feeling like you’re pushing your services, your free stuff, and your calls on people and feeling like they’re practically asking to work with you.

But it all started with making mindset shifts so that I could break out of my comfort zone by putting myself out there in a way I hadn’t before and understanding what parts of my story to use to create that “interest to invested” dynamic.

Just to see if I was really on to something, I tried the same strategies with a few of my online potential clients, and before I knew it, they were investing as well.

After that, I knew I was on to something.

And this HAD to be shared.
